  • Mark Quayle (Free agent) – Rejoined Everton shortly after his release initially on a three-month contract to improve his fitness. His contract was then extended to the end of the season.
  • Dean Delaney (Cherry Orchard) – Originally on trial. Deal agreed in February 1997.
  • Gareth Farrelly (Aston Villa) – A tribunal on 23rd July 1997 ruled that Everton were to pay Aston Villa £700,000 plus £200,000 add-ons.
  • Danny Williamson (West Ham United) – Everton and West Ham United agreed an exchange deal where Everton received Danny Williamson and West Ham United received David Unsworth and £1,000,000.
  • Mitch Ward (Sheffield United) – Mitch Ward joined Everton on loan initally so that he would be available for their match against Chelsea the next day.
  • Carl Tiler and Mitch Ward (Sheffield United) – Everton and Sheffield United agreed an exchange deal where Everton received Carl Tiler and Mitch Ward and Sheffield United received Graham Stuart and £500,000.
  • Don Hutchison (Sheffield United) – Everton and Sheffield United agreed an exchange deal where Everton received Don Hutchison and Sheffield United received Jon O'Connor and £1,000,000.
